DLP Twenty – The Series

As of November 8, 2011, the Designing Disney Research Center will publish each month up to the official launch of the twentieth anniversary celebrations (April 2012), an article highlighting a very special moment in the early history of (Euro) Disneyland Paris.

Today, we take you back, way back into time, twenty-one years to be exact, to the Grand Opening of the Euro Disney Preview Center.

Grand Opening of the Euro Disney Preview Center

Early November 1990, journalists, dignitaries and VIP’s were graciously invited by the Euro Disney Team to attend the inauguration ceremonies of “Espace Euro Disney” (also known as the “Euro Disney Preview Center”) on Wednesday, the fifth of December 1990 at 11:30 a.m. The celebrations would be concluded by 1:00 p.m.

The invitation stated the following:

Espace Euro Disney - Where the magic of 1992 begins today!

Please join us in the celebration of the Grand Opening of Espace Euro Disney. You’re invited to a preview glimpse of the magic, excitement and wonders to come in 1992. The Euro Disney Team has created a whimsical setting inspired by the film classic Fantasia. Here you discover unique displays, a Disney boutique and a refreshment corner all done in the magical Disney style.

The primary attraction of Espace Euro Disney is an exclusively produced 35-milimeter film, which will transport you on a big screen tour of Europe’s incredible new resort destination. Come share the magic with us for the inauguration of Espace Euro Disney.

On Monday, the third of December 1990 at 12:30 p.m., a “sneak peek” was organized too. Invitees were offered a buffet luncheon.

In 1992, a touring exhibition showcasing the Euro Disney project was put on display in various European cities (London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Madrid…) and during the Universal Exposition of Seville (from May 25 - 18h00 - until September 13, 1992 in the “Jardines del Guadalquivir”).

This traveling Euro Disney Preview Center was modeled after Sleeping Beauty Castle. The structure was made of iron and fiberglass and was 69 feet tall. Inside the castle, a publicity video was shown four times an hour.

At the Universal Exposition, a small shop and photo location (with Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy) were added and could be found in the tents just next to the castle.

Euro Disney’s presence in Seville was the half of a promotional agreement whereby Disney and Expo '92 got to display their wares at each other's sites.

Nice collection... I designed many of the give away items for the opening, 20 years ago, working for Pat Pattison of Promotoys in Burbank California.
