On June 23, 1963, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room premiered at Disneyland (California). It’s a Hawaiian theme musical show that features 225 animated singing birds, flowers and Tikis.
Walt Disney originally envisioned the attraction as a dinner show. But after evaluating the challenges of combining the show with a restaurant operation, he changed the format.
When the Enchanted Tiki Room opened, it was the world’s first Audio Animatronics show. The figures were controlled by floor-to-ceiling computers located in a room underneath the theater.
The attraction was sponsored by United Airlines. And while it was owned by Walt Disney’s private company “WED Enterprises”, guests had to purchase a special ticket to see the show.
The Enchanted Tiki Room became an instant success because it opened in a period in where all things Polynesian were all the rage. And even after 50 years, it has lost none of its popularity!
